EURO 2020: SHAQIRI ANONYMOUS IN DEFEAT

Liverpool playmaker XerdanShaqiri was largely ineffective as Switzerland suffered their first defeat at the Euro 2020 tournament currently being held in twelve countries. The Liverpool player didn’t have any real impact on the game as his Swiss team lost 3-0 to host nation Italy in a Group A encounter.

Shaqiri and his Switzerland national team colleagues were second best in almost all the departments on the way to the heavy defeat at the hands of the Italians and now face a big fight to qualify for the round of 16 from Group A.

Sassuolomidfielder Manuel Locatelli was the star of the game after his two goals with one coming in each half. The Arsenal and Juventus transfer target had not scored more than one goal in his football career before the game against Switzerland at the StadioOlimpico in Rome on Wednesday night. Locatelli dominated Liverpool star Shaqiri and the other Switzerland midfielders and was rightly rewarded with the best player award.

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile scored a late third goal for Italy who made it back-to-back three-goal wins in their group. Italy had never scored more than two goals in a game at the European Championship before the current edition being played this summer.

The Italians scored three goals for the first time in the competition when they thrashed Turkey 3-0 in the opening game of Euro 2020 last week Friday. They have now scored six goals in the first two games after the emphatic win over Switzerland took their recent run to ten straight wins without conceding at least one goal. The Italians will now face Wales in their final group game knowing that at least a draw would be enough to emerge as Group A winners. On their part, Switzerland will face bottom club Turkey needing a win to progress either through second position or third position in Group A.
